The Science of Fiber

Fiber is an essential component of a healthy diet and for the promotion of healthy gastrointestinal function. Fiber intake helps speed up intestinal transit, promotes regularity, and helps reduce the likelihood of constipation.

Fiber also helps to absorb toxins and promotes normal cholesterol levels, which helps maintain cardiovascular health. In addition, fiber has beneficial effects on satiety, weight management, and blood sugar control by slowing the release of sugars into the bloodstream.

Fiber can be classified as either soluble or insoluble:

  • Soluble—fiber that dissolves in water to form a gel-like material, which slows down digestion.
    • Soluble fiber prolongs stomach emptying time and helps to promote healthy cholesterol levels1 and healthy blood sugar levels.
    • Food sources of soluble fiber include oat bran, citrus, pears, nuts, flaxseed, oranges, apples, and carrots.
  • Insoluble—fiber that does not dissolve in water. Passing through the gastrointestinal tract relatively intact, these fibers are considered to promote movement of material while increasing bulk to the diet.
    • Mainly acts in the colon to add bulk and help retain water, resulting in larger and softer stools.
    • This fiber is found in foods such as wheat bran, green beans, seeds, nuts, and dark, leafy vegetables.
  • Studies suggest that increased dietary fiber along with calorie restriction helps in weight management and decreases hunger feelings.2,3

Types of Fiber in SLIM10 Fiber Chews

  • Polydextrose, a soluble fiber, is a synthetic polymer of dextrose, created from glucose, sorbitol, and citric acid.
  • Inulin is a type of non-digestible oligosaccharide that is found in many plants and herbs, including chicory, onions, leeks, asparagus, and artichokes. Because inulin's structure has a long chain with glucose terminals, it is fermented longer than other prebiotics and is believed to stimulate the growth of Bifidobacterium.
  • Bamboo fiber is insoluble fiber from the cellulose fiber extracted from bamboo.
  • Also contains oat and soy fiber, both insoluble fibers.
