Clinical Grade Lutein Is the Single Most Important Nutrient for Your Eyes
When it comes to supplements for eye health, the importance of lutein cannot be overstated. Clinical Grade Lutein—with 20 mg of lutein and 4 mg of naturally occurring zeaxanthin—provides just what you need for premier eye health.
What’s more, Healthy Directions' Clinical Grade Lutein is sourced from award-winning, clinically studied Lutemax® 2020, a naturally derived marigold extract providing all three macular carotenoids—lutein and enhanced levels of both zeaxanthin isomers (RR- and RS [meso]-zeaxanthin)—at the same 5:1 ratio as found in nature. This unique combination of lutein with zeaxanthin isomers makes Lutemax 2020 a highly effective eye health ingredient.
You see, macular pigment consists mostly of 3 carotenoids: lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin. That’s over 70% of the carotenoid content of the retina! Which makes lutein one of the single most important carotenoids for your eyes. In fact, there are multiple studies that show lutein alone, and in combination with zeaxanthin, support the health of the macula, support vision under low light conditions, and may protect the overall health of your eyes against oxidative stress caused by blue light exposure.
Even mainstream doctors have jumped on board the lutein bandwagon, but beware…they’re not always recommending truly beneficial levels that will deliver maximum results. And now, there are more options than ever out there for you to choose from, making it even more confusing.
So how do you know you’re getting the best quality? Do your homework!
Clinical Grade Lutein contains the clinically researched dosage of lutein, in the clinically researched form and proper scientifically balanced ratios so you know you’re getting the best quality. See the chart and see the difference for yourself.
Can I double my dose of Lutein?
It’s safe to double your dose of Clinical Grade Lutein to 40 mg—just two tiny pills, per day. This might be helpful for those who occasionally find difficulty adapting to lower light conditions, such as going from a darker to a lighter room or going outside on an especially sunny day.
Clinically studied lutein provides free-radical protection
Lutein has been shown in multiple studies and multiple dosages to effectively shield the retina, lens, and macula from free-radical damage caused by years of exposure to oxygen and light. A healthy retina and macula are vital for seeing clear, sharp images and perceiving colors. Unfortunately, the amount of lutein in your eyes naturally declines with age. Therefore, supplementing with lutein is important no matter what your age.
Research supports Lutemax 2020 lutein for eye health
A study conducted at the University of Georgia found that supplementing with 5, 10, or 20 mg of OmniActive Lutemax 2020 Lutein, the exact same lutein in Healthy Directions' Clinical Grade Lutein formula, supports normal Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD), with the most rapid increase shown with10 mg.1 Having a higher MPOD is an important measurement of eye health, as macular pigment plays a critical role in protecting the macula, filtering blue light exposure, and helping to maintain crisp, detailed, colorful vision.
Better yet, another key finding of the study was that the levels of carotenoids in the center of the macula were raised in a dose-dependent fashion, with the highest dose, 20 mg (the dosage in Clinical Grade Lutein), yielding the highest rise in central MPOD.
While this latest study was conducted on younger subjects, ages 18–25, it is additional confirmation that no matter your age, supplementing with lutein means you are getting serious support for maintaining the health of your eyes.
Additional research supports new MPOD findings
In another double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, individuals received varying doses of lutein and zeaxanthin combinations—from 6 mg lutein and 1 mg zeaxanthin up to 20 mg lutein and 4 mg zeaxanthin—or a placebo. Research showed that supplementation, at all dosage levels, supports normal serum lutein and zeaxanthin levels, normal macular pigment optical density (MPOD), and overall eye health.2
Three more studies on improved glare tolerance and macular health
- In this study, adults who took 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin daily had significant improvements in the concentration of protective carotenoids in the macula of the eyes, as well as MPOD, glare tolerance, and other aspects of vision health. Specifically, MPOD levels improved and individuals were able to tolerate more intense glaring light.3 Overall, the study showed that lutein and zeaxanthin improve the ability to adjust to glare and contrast while helping support visual acuity.
- In another double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, individuals were randomly assigned to one of three groups: placebo, 12 mg Lutemax 2020, or 24 mg Lutemax 2020 for one year. Research showed that supplementation at both dosages supports visual acuity in bright light conditions, visual recovery after bright light exposure, normal macular pigment optical density (MPOD), normal serum lutein and zeaxanthin levels, and overall eye health.4
- Finally in a third, six-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, individuals received either a placebo or Lutemax 2020. Research showed that supplementation supports normal macular pigment optical density (MPOD), visual acuity in bright light conditions, visual recovery after bright light exposure, visual differentiation, visual processing, visual function, vision in low light conditions, and overall eye health.5
That’s a lot of protection for your eyes—confirmed by study after study!
Zeaxanthin helps maintain lens health
Zeaxanthin—most likely the RR-zeaxanthin in Lutemax 2020—is found largely in the inner disk of the retina. Plus, meso-zeaxanthin—the other zeaxanthin isomer in Lutemax 2020—is found largely in the central macula. Both of these eye health nutrients are critical as they help maintain the health of your lenses, photoreceptors, and retinal lining.
Similar to lutein, zeaxanthin concentrations in the macula area of the retina naturally decline as you age. But since your body can’t produce zeaxanthin—and meso-zeaxanthin is normally not obtained in the diet—it’s important to supplement with optimal amounts. With Clinical Grade Lutein you get 4 mg of naturally occurring zeaxanthin.
Lutemax 2020 also supports healthy skin
In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, individuals took either Lutemax 2020 (10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin isomers, RR and RS) or a placebo for 12 weeks. Research showed that Lutemax 2020 supports skin brightness (as measured by luminance) and healthy skin tone—for overall healthy skin.6
Just 20 years ago, supplementation for the eyes simply wasn’t on the radar of most eye doctors, let alone MDs. Here we are two decades later and eye health supplements are everywhere. But only a select few offer the premium quality and clinically studied dosage that Clinical Grade Lutein provides with premiere, Lutemax 2020 Lutein.

Science and Quality
Clinically Studied Lutemax® 2020 Provides Balanced Ratios of Lutein and Zeaxanthin
Clinical Grade Lutein contains Lutemax 2020, sourced from marigolds and providing balanced ratios of lutein and zeaxanthin to enhance the absorption of both of these protective carotenoids in the macula of the eye.
A revolutionary combination of lutein with enhanced levels of zeaxanthin
Many eye health supplements supply only one carotenoid necessary for macular health—lutein. While lutein is a potent antioxidant that provides a significant amount of the total carotenoid content of the eye, healthy eyes require more than lutein alone. Lutemax 2020 combines lutein with zeaxanthin isomers (RR- and RS-zeaxanthin), which are BOTH critical players in supplying the macula with vital supportive nutrients.
Effective levels in scientifically balanced ratios
Lutemax 2020 not only supplies both lutein and zeaxanthin isomers to support eye health, but it also delivers these nutrients at significantly higher levels. Lutemax 2020 includes a scientifically balanced combination of lutein and zeaxanthin isomers to enhance absorption of both of these vital carotenoids.
Lutein Promotes an Increase in MPOD
In a one-year, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, participants received 20 mg of lutein once daily or a placebo. The group receiving lutein experienced a significant increase in MPOD in as little as six months and again at 12 months, and noticed improvements in contrast and glare sensitivity especially in high and low light conditions.
Additionally, the study showed improved bioavailability of lutein in the eye in as little as one month. Further, there were significant improvements in scores on the National Eye Institute 25-ltem Visual Functioning Questionnaire. Overall the study showed improved eye health benefits for those supplementing with 20 mg of lutein daily.1
And in another two-year, randomized study with patients age 50 and over, supplementing with either 10 or 20 mg a day of lutein improved macular health by increasing the retinal sensitivity (the ability to adapt to light) and increasing macular pigment density.2

DAILY STRESSORS—ARE YOUR EYES PROTECTED?
We protect our eyes with sunglasses when we’re outside, but inside or out, our eyes are bombarded by high-energy blue light, seemingly everywhere.
These wavelengths of light are emitted from not only the sun, but computer screens, fluorescent and LED lighting, e-readers—even your TV. Too much exposure to this high-energy blue light can leave macular and other eye tissue susceptible. When this light strikes the retina, it increases the production of free radicals that can set off the process of oxidative stress in the cellular structure of the eye.
Excess exposure to high-energy blue light leaves macular and other eye tissue vulnerable. The high-energy blue light striking the retina increases the production of free radicals, which sets off a chain reaction of oxidative stress that can affect eye health.
Lutein is concentrated in the macula and Lutemax 2020 has been shown in multiple clinical studies to filter the exposure to blue light in the macula. And because lutein naturally dissipates as you age and it cannot be produced by the body, supplementation is vital.
Lutein and zeaxanthin support the overall health of your eyes, filtering this high-energy blue light…and protecting against your exposure to daily oxidative stress.
