When it comes to hormones and aging, there’s a lot of attention focused on women. But did you know men experience a hormonal shift, too? As you age, your testosterone production decreases.

As this happens, it can affect your levels of mood, stress, and anxiousness. Sleep may not come as easily as it used to. You may also experience changes in your strength training program and overall wellbeing. Plus, you may notice you don’t have the same muscle mass you had when you were younger.

You can support healthy testosterone levels by losing weight and exercising. It’s also important to decrease your alcohol intake and eat more monosaturated fats, including coconut oil, salmon, grass-fed beef, and avocados. Plus, you want to keep your stress level in check and get plenty of sleep.

There’s also an herb called ashwagandha, which I’ve long recommended for stress, that can have a positive impact on testosterone levels. Plus, it tackles many of the challenges men face as they age—from improving sleep to helping with stress, mood, and more.

Ashwagandha and Testosterone—The Little-Known Connection

What is ashwagandha? Scientifically known as Withania somnifera, ashwagandha is one of a select group of herbs classified as adaptogens because they help the body “adapt” to a changing environment. It has a long history as a traditional remedy in India and has been used in many places around the world, including Pakistan, Morocco, Spain, and South Africa.

I’ve spent many years studying ashwagandha. There are many different forms and the one that has impressive research behind it for men is called KSM-66®.

In clinical studies, KSM-66:

  • Increased serum testosterone levels in men
  • Improved sexual health
  • Enhanced, boosted, and supported muscle size in men
  • Supported muscle recovery

So, it tackles some of the biggest health challenges men face as they age, which can make a significant difference not only in your health but how you feel.

Getting to the Root of Ashwagandha’s Benefits

Unlike other forms of ashwagandha that use both the roots and leaves of the ashwagandha plant, KSM-66 uses just the roots—which is consistent with how it’s used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.

What’s also critical is that it’s full-spectrum, which means there’s a balance of active ingredients—and none of the constituents are overrepresented.

Inside the body, KSM-66 works on both oxidative and non-oxidative mechanisms to provide support for men’s sexual health. Oxidatively, it provides vital antioxidant support.

Non-oxidatively, it works on the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis—the body’s stress-feedback loop—supporting healthy levels of the “stress hormone” cortisol. It also works to support an increase in testosterone levels.1Researchers also believe it’s the combination of oxidative and non-oxidative benefits that contribute to improved sexual health in men.

Plus, Ashwagandha Tackles Stress, Head-On

There’s no question stress impacts our health and how we feel. When you couple that with the sleep issues that can occur as we age, it can double that stress load—making you tired, anxious, and less likely to do the things that can keep you healthy, like eating well and exercising.

In studies, KSM-66 significantly reduced levels of cortisol, which is your body’s primary stress hormone. In one study, those taking 600 mg of KSM-66 experienced a significant reduction in cortisol, fewer feelings of stress and anxiousness, and an improvement in sleep quality.2 In another study, people taking 600 mg of KSM-66 for eight weeks had an improvement in mental functioning, attention, and information processing.3

By addressing the emotional and physical effects of stress, ashwagandha:

  • Reduces stress and anxiousness
  • Boosts your mood
  • Reduces fatigue
  • Promotes better sleep quality
  • Enhances alertness when you wake up
  • Supports everyday memory function

Plus, KSM-66 ashwagandha supports healthy weight management. In a study, taking 600 mg of KSM-66 supported body weight management in adults under stress.4 It also helps you to maintain an active lifestyle and a healthy weight.

What is the Best Way to Take Ashwagandha?

Word is slowly getting out about the important health benefits of ashwagandha for men. But as you know, I’m not one to wait—especially when there’s a remedy that can improve your health and quality of life right now.

Since the KSM-66 form of ashwagandha has such powerful benefits for men, I included it in my new Super Healthy Prostate+ formula, in the full research dose. Plus, the formula includes my top recommended nutrients to support healthy prostate function, lessen urinary discomfort, reduce frequent trips to the bathroom, and support a high level of performance in the bedroom.
